Where tomyam mirages lead
February 10, 2020
Like I said, there’s any number of international food choices to pick from if you’re so inclined. But of course, how well they suit your taste buds is another story. As it’s been a while since I had Thai food, I decided why not? Not one to travel miles in search of food, I settled on a nearby eatery I’ve been to on one previous occasion and found their food to be fairly decent.
Thumbing through the menu, I was reminded of having experienced a tomyam mirage or two on the odd occasion while driving. Wait a minute, am I seeing things? Or is there really a puddle of tomyam soup on the road in front of me? So if for no other crazier reason, it made perfect sense for me to order just that!
They have a choice of tomyam seafood or chicken. I chose the latter which was also the cheaper option because I don’t know how good it would be. This is what this picky eater does on the first visit, or in this case, when unsure if the food would be up to standard.
When my order arrived, I didn’t know whether to feel excited or overwhelmed. A whole wok of tomyam soup just for lil ole me? Wow! Don’t get me wrong. I’m not complaining. In the land of diminishing food servings, I’m actually pretty excited to see a portion this size!
For sure, it would take me a while to work my way through this meal. But I’m in no hurry, and this would make a great exercise in mindful eating for me. First, the shrimp crackers – they were still crispy so that’s a definite win. Some eateries serve shrimp crackers that are soft and chewy that have lost their crispiness. I loved these!
The soup itself I found to be somewhat diluted and lacking that punch. I would’ve preferred it to be thicker and the flavors more intense. I think if they’d let it sit on the stove to reduce it down further, it would’ve been perfect.
I couldn’t wait to try that iced Thai coffee. Although I’ve been to Thailand several times, somehow I can’t recall having tasted their coffee. Sadly here I couldn’t quite make out any distinguishing flavor or aroma because this glass of coffee was rather diluted. Is it supposed to taste different than regular coffee? I can’t say. But iced anything in this blazing heat is great!
