Just another regular day. I’m out eating alone. Again. I’m a vet at this, vet as in veteran, not veterinarian lol and I kinda enjoy it. It’s quite liberating because I don’t have to talk to anyone, I don’t have to rush and I get to eat slowly and enjoy my food, something I’ve been practicing since my last meditation retreat. I haven’t perfected the skill yet but I’ve made a little progress.
So okay, this is what I ate. Salad bars have never really been my thing but strangely, they remind me of California. As a general rule, I can’t survive on salads alone for a meal. But if I add on a side, hopefully I’ll get some extra mileage. So then, this is how I eat my salad – complement it with kaarage (Japanese boneless fried chicken) and that ubiquitous cup of coffee (without the plastic lid, of course).
I was careful to go easy on the kaarage this time. Previously, I’d been greedy over-enthusiastic and took too many pieces. Then again, some days, even 6 small pieces can be a bit much.
As for the salad, it’s easy to tell yourself: I’ll have more of this, oh and a bit more of that, and um, this too, oh don’t worry, I can finish the lot, it’s only veggies! But what I’ve learned is that even a small plate can be very deceiving. It doesn’t look like much until you keep eating…
and eating… and there’s still plenty of purple lettuce with the green apple chunks, coleslaw, broccoli-baby carrot-cherry tomato-corn, hard-oiled eggs left… and as I excavate deeper, the celery-lotus root comes into view as do those chickpeas and red kidney beans (woo-hoo, gotta love those!!) and still, you just never seem to get to the bottom.
It’s easy to underestimate a salad thinking nah, it’s only veggies, it’s not really going to fill you up. Fill you up, it does! believe you me! It took me a while to get to this point where I’m struggling with the last of the egg quarters and that final piece of kaarage. Aargh!
Oh and if you’re wondering about those chopsticks, well, wonder no mo ‘cos those chopsticks are a thang with me!
There, I’m all done. No wastage. But I have to say this, it’s never a good idea to overeat. I’m totally stuffed! But then again, veggies are just that, and they digest fast. No, really! That’s why I have to have that kaarage. I ate everything up (that’s right!) and then strolled the length of the mall doing some mindless window-shopping which I accomplished in under an hour and by then, I’m wondering where lunch has gone.
